This 60's vintage hutch takes up the long wall in the Dining Room. I keep trying to pretend I'm Candice Olsen (one of my favorite HGTV Designers) and come up with a way to utilize all these mirrors and update the look. After all, don't mirrors bring in more light and make a space seem bigger. Isn't there some way to paint it and update the hardware? Add lighting? But the knotty pine and scalloped trim keep overwhelming me. Can you come up with a better way to modernize it? Or would you rip it out? Pin It

Totally loose the scallop trim if possible - even if it means converting to a low/sleek bar sans shelving! nothing says 'our parents' colonial' more than scallop! I vote for a shiny white lacquer (or even that dove grey). then you can play with the mirrors (or not)
ReplyDeleteWhy does anyone still have scallops??? Totally agree....it's like having an Oldsmobile in the driveway! I like the idea of white lacquer!
Deletetake the shelving out, and put a lattice (either wood or a painted metal) over the mirror). paint the cabinet wood do an antique finish on it (painted with a color rub). change the knobs to something modern to fit in with the clean look of the cabinets.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea, but there are 7 separate mirrors......hmmmm....wonder if that would be noticeable under the lattice!
DeleteI doubt you'd notice the mirror seams. I saw them do this on hgtv, with that metal stuff they use on radiators. It looked great!
DeleteI say paint it, put new hardware on and granite top to modernize it.
ReplyDeleteI'd vote for adding new modern molding/trim to make it blend in better, then painting the whole thing. Of course, lose the scalloped edge. Then, sleek new hardware!
ReplyDeleteI bet my brother Donnie could do something amazing with that! - Kathryn J
ReplyDeleteI don't think we are as talented as Donnie is!!!
DeleteWow, love all the comments! Thanks so much. Now I need to pin my husband down, so we can discuss next steps!
