The inspiration? Well, the simple farmhouse styling we see throughout the rest of the house. Simple moldings. Lots of sunlight. And open to the dining room and living room.
In many ways, it reminds me of a kitchen we did a few years ago. We incorporated reclaimed lumber into the design - on the island top and the open shelving.

And like that house, we will wrap the steel beam with reclaimed lumber, to hide it with a period look.
So here's the layout. We'll have a big center island, a double french door to the deck and lots of cabinet space.

The island provides storage and a spot for the microwave.
And the guys will be building a custom mud bench with additional storage next to the back door.

I'm pretty excited about the finishes as well. The cabinets are from Thomasville, in a color called Dover - a slightly taupe color. We'll be using this complimentary quartz countertop around the perimeter of the room and reclaimed lumber for butcher block on the island.
Behind the stove, instead of a tile accent, I'm going to clean up this antique fireback we found in another house. It will add a nice touch!

Why did you switch from Thomasville from Martha Stewart? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteColor!!! I didn't want plain white and this color goes beautifully with all the other elements in the house.
DeleteI like it Laurel, and it will be interesting to see the "Dover" on the cabinets.
ReplyDeleteLove it, it will be a pleasure for the new owners to cook in and enjoy. I can just see kids sitting at the island.
ReplyDeleteI really like that countertop choice! That fireback will be a cool and unique addition!
ReplyDeleteIt's going to look so good! I'm curious though about the narrow cupboard to the right of the fridge - what will it be used for? We have one like it with narrow shelves and it's baffled me for years.
ReplyDeleteIt's a pantry cabinet. It's 24" wide and 24" deep, so it will hold quite a bit!
DeleteSorry, I meant the one on the other side! It looks like it will pull straight out?
DeleteOh the upper one!! Actually, we decided to delete both of those upper cabinets and will be installing open shelving in that area. It was a better solution under that beam that we needed to open up the room.
DeleteI used Soprano for my countertops and I love how it looks like many countertops of marble I saw when I was in France last year. It is very creamy. Not stark and there are taupe tones in it. It is not as cool as all the greys everyone is using. It also goes much better with wood tones because of this.
DeleteI like it so much I'm using it again in our latest house! It's a great neutral!
DeleteI really like putting the microwave in the island. As a short person, barely 5', I don't like the over the range microwaves - too high to see in.
ReplyDeleteThat fireback! I saw a similar one at a garage sale a couple of months ago and wanted it, but we don't have a fireplace. What a great idea to use it as a backplate for the stove, it's going to look amazing.
ReplyDeleteProject number 9 was my dream home. Void of steps...can’t wait for this one
ReplyDeleteI think this one will have a similar feel!!
