The Farmhouse: Heading Upstairs

While the second floor didn't see the dramatic changes that the first floor did, it still has a fresh new look that I really love.

To start, we tore out the 'head bumping' ceiling over the lower staircase.  That made a HUGE difference for tall people like me - you can walk up and downstairs with ease. Oh, and the whole stairwell is so much bigger.

And even better.... it let me install this dramatic light fixture.  I bought the fixture at a trade show at the Javitz Center in NYC a couple of years ago.  Somehow, it didn't look so big there with their ginormous ceilings.  But when it arrived, I realized it would need a special home to use it (not to mention a lot of space in the storage facility) - and this is it.  Doesn't it look fantastic?

And we removed wallpaper.  Lots and lots of wallpaper.  The fresh white walls and the simple sconces really make a difference.

The other big change?  The bathroom.  Originally, the toilet was the first thing you saw as you entered the bathroom, as well as the back of the closet from the adjoining room.  And the space between the vanity and bathtub was REALLY narrow.

We changed all that by moving the closet and completely replumbing the bathroom.  We added all new fixtures, including this great carrara marble basketweave floor.

And in removing the bump out above the staircase, we eliminated this narrow 'hallway' in the bathroom and moved the toilet to a more convenient location, next to the bathtub.

With the closet bump out removed, we have room for this big double vanity with a carrara marble top.

Next up?  The kids rooms!  I can't wait to share how cute they are!
