Input Needed - Kitchen Design

Once again, I've used an antique door for the pantry.  This is an old one - the guess is pre 1900!  I love the big glass panels and the two wood insets below. We'll clean up the glass and add replacements where necessary.  But here's the conundrum.   I can't decide.  Should it stay in its natural state (it's a bit rough)?  Or be painted blue?  Either way, it will be a nice focal point in the kitchen.

Which brings me to the range knobs.  We're installing a Thermador gas range in this kitchen,  Thermador has an option for custom knobs, that come in their trademark blue.  I'm crazy about these knobs (they are an extra cost....I could have bought a cheap range for what they cost...but I had to have them)!!    And I'd really like to paint the door the same color.

What's your vote?  Blue?  or Antique wood?

  1. What a great door! If you aren't going to refinish it I'd paint it blue.

I aspire to have you do a house for me someday--they are all beautiful!

  2. As pretty as that antique door is showing its age, I say blue. That pantry door is probably going to be used quite heavily. At least in my house it would be. I think paint will help keep it going for longer. Especially with kids.

  3. That's exactly the color I imagined for that door before you even asked the question.

  4. Blue. Definitely. If the wood were more of a honey tone, I might go for the natural look, but this dark color seems more suitable for exterior sites.

  5. Why not keep it as it is but distress it a bit by adding some blue paint distressed accents to the door? That way it would retain some of the originality of the door, but tie in the blue.

  6. If something is unpainted it should stay that way if there is no damage to wood. If you needed to repair such as filler I would say paint. I would love the old look of the door as it is .

  7. Blue sounds pretty wonderful – but, you can always wait until everything else is done before deciding.

    (Great door!)

  8. I can't believe I'm going to say this cause I'm a blue girl and I love paint, but... I'd keep the door original. That's what makes the door special - it's age. It's got patina!! And if you paint over it, it will look great no doubt, but it will lose what makes it special and probably the reason you got/saved it in the first place. And one other thing, the blue door would compete with the fabulous oven knobs, and why have competition? Let each one shine just as they are!!!

  9. As much as I love old wood, the range sets the tone. With those blue knobs, the door needs to tie in.

  10. Blue. The style and big windows will indicate its age, but not be out of place with what I'm sure will be your gorgeous design and upgrades in the same space.

  12. I vote for blue! It will tie in with the knobs but also would make me smile every time I looked at it. A nice spot of cheerfulness. Love all yor work!!

  13. Go blue! Brilliant look with the knobs, I'd say.

  14. If you're going to paint it blue why not just buy a new door? I say leave it as the new owner can always do that if they share your taste.

  15. I love the door, but I'm not sure I'm going to love what I see through it. A true working pantry is going to have lots of different items in different shapes, sizes, colours.

So perhaps replace the glass with a collection of different coloured panes: the blue of the knobs predominating but other coordinating colours playing a minor role.

    1. GOOD THINKING! I think the wood is too dark and blue would be better AND replacing the glass with frosted or bluish or other tie-in seems better to me too.

  16. I'd paint it blue since the stain seems too dark to be attractive in the new space. I echo another commenter, that if you have to replace some glass anyway, would it be more practical to have a frosted or patterned glass to obscure the (possibly) untidy pantry view?

  17. Blue! I love the knobs on the range!

  18. I personally love it in its natural state. If you want to paint it, maybe buy a new door with glass panels. I definitely would not replace with frosted. Maybe a fabric curtain inside to hide the pantry items but keep the glass for its age and patina.

  19. Not everyone loves blue! I say leave it as is!
