Design Update - Master Bath

We aren't going to have a giant master bath in this house, but it will have everything the homeowner needs and includes truly beautiful finishes.  But first, let me update you, because the floor plan has changed a bit since the last time I shared it.  For starters, we've replaced the tub with a large shower and a built in bench.  There are two other bathtubs in the house, so we didn't think a 3rd one was necessary.

And then I saw on Houzz, one of my favorite websites, a newly published 2014 Winter Bathroom Trends study that found more and more homeowners are leaving a bathtub out of the master (Click Here for the full study).  I guess we're trend setters!  The other big design change is including a stackable washer/dryer closet, to make laundry chores convenient!  It took up a good bit of the master bath, but I keep hearing from potential buyers that they really like having the laundry on the 2nd floor (of course, we'll still have the old hookup in the basement)

So here's the mood board with our design picks:
The predominate colors will be a classic combination of black and white marble.  The marble-mosaic compass rose links to Casco Bay, which is only a few steps from the house.  It will be featured in the shower  wall, behind a set of glass doors.  The large black vanity provides lots of  counter space (something I can never get enough of!) and storage space.  Its carrera marble top ties beautifully with the mosaic shower and floor.  And I found this top of the line Newport Brass faucet at a tent sale from our local plumbing supply house.  I can't wait to see it installed.

Our installation schedule was moving along beautifully until today.  The shower was delivered and we realized it's the wrong size.  Yikes!  And getting a new one that's the right size has a lead time of 3-4 weeks -  which seriously impacts our schedule.  So while I had hoped to have photos to share sometime soon……it's actually going to be a bit of a wait.

So, what do you think?  Do you like the classic black and white?

  1. I must be in the minority, but I wouldn't buy or rent a house that doesn't have a tub in the master. Any other bathroom in the house with a shower only is fine, but the master bath must have a tub.

    1. It does seem to be a personal preference kind of thing. In our case, we could have had a tub and shower……but then there wasn't room for the laundry closet. I hear a lot from folks about wanting the laundry upstairs! So we'll see what kind of reaction we get when this house goes on the market.

  2. As a woman of a certain age (over 60), the idea of sitting in dirty water grosses me out. Having said that, when we built our home 9 years ago we caved and put in a jetted tub. Why - purely for resale. I can't tell you how much I hate that huge thing and how much I resent climbing in to dust it! Since master and laundry room are on the first floor, we didn't have to make a choice.

    1. It's funny you say that Denise, because if you look at the Houzz analysis, the older you are, the less you want a tub. But our daughters both say exactly what you do - sitting in a tub is gross. So maybe the younger folks that want a tub use it for washing kids and dogs!

  3. Looks like it's going to be so pretty. I hate mess-ups with supplies. We just had the wrong exterior door come in (for the second time!) with another month wait added on.

    1. Ha ha, truth be told, it's more of a Laurel mess-up than a supplier problem. Which probably makes me even crazier :-)

  4. Hi, I discovered your blog after seeing one of your pins (the one with the DIY nautical map wallpaper in the powder room?). I want to catch up on all your previous remodels but for now I'm glad to be following your beautiful renovations going forward!

Classic black and white bath-- I love it. I don't think this ever goes out of style. And the hexagon tile is going to add such a luxurious look to the bath (but what a pain to tile it must be!). Is the vanity and faucet from PB? Very elegant as well.

I definitely think the laundry needs to be on the same floor as the bedrooms. In our current house, we have to go down into the basement... yuck, up and down 2 flights of stairs each time I have to change a load. My only concern is that I personally wouldn't want my guests having to go into our master bath when they need to do laundry. A lot of older kids also do their own laundry, so having the laundry tucked in a closet somewhere on the bedroom floor hallway (or even the first floor) is a much better idea.

I can imagine it must be tough finding space when renovating a house... :-/ overall not a bad compromise putting it in the master bath, and beautiful design plans.

  5. Hi Zuzu, so glad you found the blog!!! Thanks so much for reading.

The vanity is from a company called Foremost and the faucet (which I love) is from Newport Brass. I can't wait to see them installed!

It's so funny you mentioned guests or kids doing the laundry, because we had a LOT of discussion about that! But since we'll be leaving the existing washer and dryer in the basement, we decided older kids could do their own laundry down there :-) Ha Ha..

    Thanks again, Laurel

    1. I have to agree with Zuzu...I would like the laundry on the second floor, but not in the master bath...I'd much prefer a linen closet or other storage in that space...on the other hand I'd love it in a hall closet or family bath!

Not 60 yet, but I have no interest in a bathtub! Too hot, even before the "tropical moments" started to occur! Not so worried about sitting in a cesspool...just don't care for sitting in hot water!

    2. We did try to figure out how to put the laundry in the family bath, but we just couldn't get it to fit. There are always compromises when you're doing a renovation. Things don't always fit as nicely as you'd like! But I still think the new homeowners will really like the convenience on the 2nd floor :-)

  6. No tub in the master - yeah! I so want to take our tub out but keep hearing, "resale, resale, resale". Maybe I don't care as much anymore!

I'm curious - why are you using a molded shower insert rather than stone or tile?

    Love your houses!

    1. Thanks so much!

My plumber strongly recommended using a molded base. He's just had too many 'call back's over the years as the tile eventually fails and there are leaks. And I've seen too many houses where the tile floor looks pretty grungy after several years of hard use! This will be easy to clean and look great for many years!

And I'd get rid of that tub if you hate it!!!

  7. Hi Laurel - Love your design style and your blog! You are so talented! We just put the final touches on our upstairs remodeling project plan and it includes a large shower instead of a tub in the master..and a stackable washer/dryer in what was the linen closet in the main bath. We're keeping the basement hook ups for future buyers, but I am so excited not to have to go up and down two flights of stairs for the laundry! Glad to hear that two of my 'must have's' for our remodel are also on trend! I've had such fun picking all the color scheme and finishes; tile, counter, cabinets, fixtures etc. Hope my project turns out half as well as your great work!

    1. Thanks so much for checking out the blog Rebecca!!! Obviously great minds think alike :-) You're obviously trend setters with the shower and washer/dryer! Isn't it fun to pick everything out (and maybe a bit nerve wracking as well!). I'm sure it will be beautiful - send me a pic on Facebook when it's done. I'd love to see it!

      Best,

      Laurel
